Amazonimations
Amazonimations is a collaborative research project that brings together anthropologists, animators and artists with Matses people in Amazonian Peru, who until recently had limited contact with the outside world.
We worked together to produce three animated films. In each film, a different generation of Matses tells a story: the elderly talk about the traditional ritual of acate, frog poison; Matses children’s story is about rainforest animals and spirits; and young adults who migrated from the forest to the city recount the challenges of adjusting to urban life. The films tell Matses people’s own stories amidst growing change and the strive for a sustainable future.
The project was funded by a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant and based at the University of Bristol.
